REVIEW: Rich's in Vancouver Offers "Bohemian Charm"

Rich’s Place

Vancouver, B.C.

Located across the street from an aging autobody shop, Rich’s Place offers convenience in its short walking distance to East Vancouver’s bustling Commercial Drive.

On a recent visit, the sleeping quarters were not ready upon arrival – but a bed was quickly made. For the most part the sheets did not match (although two of the pillow cases did – a nice touch), but I was assured any stains were from paint and not something questionable. In fact, the paint-stained motif runs throughout the establishment, which oozes “bohemian charm.”

In terms of dining, a variety of unidentified processed meats are available after the proprietor’s girlfriend returns from work. There is room in the fridge for beer (though it is recommended to keep the cans or bottles in the box). On a previous visit, salami and cheese were also available… though you’ll probably want to eat out anyway.

For example, a $2.99 breakfast is only a 15-20 minute walk away (depending on severity of hangover) at Sorry Babushka on Commercial Drive. The breakfast special runs until 3:00 pm. Beer is extra (though still moderately priced). Be warned: on weekends the price of breakfast rises to an outrageous $4.99. Best to go with the beer-only option then.

Rich’s does offer shuttle service, though you may be asked to operate the vehicle yourself if the driver/proprietor has had too much to drink. Shuttles to and from the airport and ferry terminals are free (though payment in the form of beer is accepted). Daytime excursions (such as hiking, shopping or patio drinking) are available and recommended, as the harsh daytime light does not do the establishment justice.

Overall, the service is exceptional, as the proprietor will climb through windows and smash broken door locks to ensure a good night’s sleep.

While not offering the level of cleanliness that many establishments give, I’m happy to report no signs of bed bugs. Math flies, however, are a problem.

On-site entertainment options are minimal, but art abounds – and “I (heart) Al” written in the TV screen dust definitely made this reviewer feel at home.
